We are very excited to announce that Wind Crest is becoming Capriolo Winery!
We thank you for your patience as we get the property ready for our grand opening - please stay tuned for updates.
We also want to thank Dale and Jan for their stewardship of the vines and wish them well in their retirement!
OUR ROOTS
As a young girl I dreamt of living on a vineyard and this year, for my 50th trip around the sun, my wonderful husband supported me in making that dream a reality! The winery began in 1998, when the first vines were planted on the property. The grape varieties, including DeChaunac, Edelweiss, Frontenac, LaCrosse, Petit Amie, St. Peppin, St. Vincent and Vignoles, work best with the Nebraska soil. In addition to the grape varieties, an orchard producing apricots, cherries, and pears were planted and those fruits are crafted into some of the wines.
Until 2007, the fruit was sold to other wineries and in 2008, WindCrest Winery was born with the first vintage of wine processed and bottled on the property.
Fast forward to 2022 and the winery is now Capriolo Winery (it means roe male dear or "buck" in Italian and is pronounced cap-ree-oh-lo) and it is the first Black owned winery in the state of Nebraska!
